Proper diet and nutrition is paramount for success after bariatric surgery. Once the surgery is complete diet and nutrition is more important than ever. Not only does it help provide sustainable fat loss, but immediately after surgery the quality of diet facilitates healing. A high quality diet promotes healing, while a lower quality diet can prolong the healing process. The Bariatric Diet using Bari Life Bariatric Supplements should be divided into four different phases.

Why Different Phases?

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.0.73″ use_custom_width=”on” custom_width_px=”1280px”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.0.89″ background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” border_style=”solid” module_alignment=”left”]

The main reason for having various phases of the diet is to help promote healing. The proper amount of high quality protein is readily absorbed and used by the body for healing, while carbohydrates and fats are more difficult to process by the body. Also, the consistency of certain foods are harder to digest than others. Liquids are the easiest to digest and absorb.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.0.73″ background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” border_style=”solid” module_alignment=”left”]

Next are pureed foods, which are easier to digest and absorb compared to solid foods. This is why we start with liquids (Phase 1), transition to purees (2), then to soft foods (3). The Full Bariatric Diet (4) contains foods that are the hardest to digest – starches and red meats. The duration of each of the phases varies based on the procedure type. See the chart below…

Phase 1 of the bariatric diet is characterized by liquids only. What this means is nutrient sources should be taken from high protein supplements. Portion size should be approximately 1-2 oz. every 15-30 minutes. The goal should be to consume at least 64 oz. of fluid per day. Phase 1 should also be supplemented with Bari Life Multivitamin Powder- it allows for the easiest absorption while the patient is healing. The entire diet will typically consist of protein supplements only.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image _builder_version=”3.0.89″ src=”https://barilife.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/phase-2.png” show_in_lightbox=”off” url_new_window=”off” use_overlay=”off” sticky=”off” align=”left” always_center_on_mobile=”off” border_style=”solid” force_fullwidth=”off” show_bottom_space=”on” /][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.0.73″ background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” border_style=”solid” module_alignment=”left”]

Portion size: 3 tablespoons (1.5 oz). This phase is characterized by pureed foods. Because protein helps promote healing and patients are limited on space for food, we recommend protein foods only. The food group containing the highest amount of protein is the meat group. Patients can have any type of meat except red meats. From a consistency standpoint, think cottage cheese (very soft, very moist). Phase 2 should also be supplemented with Bari Life Multivitamin Powder- it allows for the easiest absorption while the patient is healing. Continue to supplement the diet with protein supplements.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″][et_pb_image _builder_version=”3.0.89″ src=”https://barilife.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/phase-3.png” show_in_lightbox=”off” url_new_window=”off” use_overlay=”off” sticky=”off” align=”left” always_center_on_mobile=”off” border_style=”solid” force_fullwidth=”off” show_bottom_space=”on” /][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.0.73″ background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” border_style=”solid” module_alignment=”left”]

Portion size: 2-3 oz (limit to 1 oz of fruit or vegetables – focus should be on protein). When patients reach phase 3, they can often tolerate foods of normal consistency. Generally, patients can tolerate fruits and vegetables as well as ground beef. We ask them to avoid all other red meat and starchy vegetables (ie, corn, peas and potatoes). Continue to supplement the diet with protein supplements.

Portion size: 4-6 oz (1/2 – 2/3 meal should be a protein source). Additions to the diet are red meat and starches. Starches should be limited to 1 oz. See below a sample Phase 4 meal plan. Included in the meal plan are approved food choices. Continue to supplement the diet with protein supplements.
